If you’ve ever wondered what’s the best way to plump sofa cushions or how you can make your cushions look more expensive, you’ve come to the right place!

We’ve all been there… your cushions looked great when you first bought them, but over time they get flatter, saggier and start to look a little scruffy. Well fear not, because transforming your cushions from lifeless to luxury is easier than you think! For plumper and more expensive-looking cushions, check out our top tips below.

How to make your sofa cushions look plump

1. Buy bigger inserts

The most obvious reason your cushions are flat and lacklustre is because the inserts are too small. As a rule of thumb, always buy inserts that are 5cm larger than the cushion cover. This might seem counter-intuitive, but a large insert will prevent any sagging corners and will keep your cushions looking full and plump.

2. Opt for duck or goose feathers

The most affordable cushion filling is polyester, also known as polyfill. Whilst great for allergy sufferers, they’re not so great at keeping their shape no matter how often you plump them. Duck and goose feathers however can be easily moulded back into shape and stay plumper for longer. Just know they’ll need fluffing more regularly than polyfill cushions!

3. Fluff regularly

Speaking of fluffing, you’ll need to do this often if you want to give your cushions a new lease of life when they’re looking flat. Start by chopping the centre of the cushion to redistribute the filling (which tends to gather in the middle), then hold two corners and give it a shake so the filling moves into the other two corners. Repeat on all four sides so there’s no emptiness or sagging.

1. Karate chop

This works better with feather cushions but once plumped, give the top a light karate chop to create an indentation. This trick of the trade used by designers will instantly make your cushions look more expensive.

2. Mix and match fabrics and textures

For that professional ‘an interior designer has designed my home’ look, mix and match different cushion fabrics like velvet, bouclé, linen and wool. Texture adds depth and interest, which automatically makes your home look considered and expensive.

3. Add embellishments

If you want your cushions to look more expensive, pay attention to the finer details. Opt for covers with tassels, fringing, pom poms or embroidery, as these add a luxe feel and are an easy way to elevate your space.

4. Layer sizes and shapes

A handy trick to make your cushions look more expensive is to layer larger cushions with smaller ones, as well as mixing up different shapes like squares and rectangles. Need some inspo? This blog will give you an idea of how best to arrange your cushions for that premium look.

5. Pattern clash

Just like it’s important to mix and match textures, shapes and sizes, don’t forget to vary different patterns if you want your cushions to look elevated and well thought through. Contrasting stripes with florals, for example, is a sophisticated way of adding personality to your home.

If your cushions have seen better days, why not treat yourself to some new ones? Whatever shape, size or filling you’re looking for, we have plenty of cushions to choose from that are not only stylish and comfortable, but look much more expensive than they are!
