Outdoor Rugs

An outdoor rug can make a group of furniture feel like one proper seating or dining area, rather than a few separate pieces on the patio. Under a lounge set, it creates a softer centre point around the sofa and coffee table. Beneath a garden dining set, it helps mark out where meals happen and gives plain paving a bit more character.

The rug should sit comfortably with your garden furniture rather than looking squeezed underneath it. For lounge seating, aim to place at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug. Around an outdoor dining table, choose a size that gives the chairs room to move without catching on the edge. Smaller rugs work well on balconies, porches and compact seating areas.

Pattern can completely change the feel of the space. Slate, onyx and geometric designs add definition to pale paving and neutral rattan, while sage and leaf prints sit naturally alongside planting. Sky blue feels fresh and relaxed, and orange, pink or mustard can brighten a garden with simpler furniture. Reversible designs give you another look when you fancy a change. Let one bold pattern do most of the work, then pick out a colour from it in your outdoor cushions or throws.
