Give Your Seats a Lift
A few well-chosen cushions can bring a garden seating area together without changing the furniture itself. The key is choosing designs that work with where you sit and how you use the space, whether that's an upright garden dining chair, a wooden bench or a deep outdoor sofa.
Seat pads add a little extra comfort without covering the chair back, while square cushions sit neatly against benches, sofas and sun loungers. Bolster cushions can support your back or arm, and floor cushions provide a more relaxed seat when friends or family join you outside. Check the cushion’s shape and proportions against your garden furniture so it sits within the seat rather than hanging over the edges or pushing you too far forwards.
Plain shades make it easy to pull different pieces of furniture together. Moss, olive and natural tones sit comfortably alongside planting and wood, while navy, chocolate and pecan add depth to cream or pale rattan. Pink, apricot, yellow and red bring more colour to a simple patio, and stripes, checks or floral designs can give neutral seating a clearer focal point. A simple mix often works best: choose one pattern, then pick out one or two of its colours in plain cushions.
