Autumn is all about embracing natural colours, mixing up materials and finally being able to say ‘actually, more is more!’. You don't need to change everything, either. A few extra layers and seasonal touches can take your bed from summer to autumn without a complete makeover.

Our autumn bedding ideas are perfect for keeping you cosy while the temperatures drop. It’s your chance to embrace the fun of autumn bed sheets and seasonal duvet covers while layering up blankets, cushions and bedspreads.

Autumn Bedding Ideas At A Glance

Looking for the quickest route to a cosy autumn bed? Here's where to start:

  • Choose a versatile duvet: Go warm enough for cooler nights without automatically reaching for the highest tog you can find.
  • Layer it up: Add blankets, throws and bedspreads that you can pull up when it's chilly and kick off if you're too warm.
  • Mix your materials: Combine smooth, quilted, fluffy and velvety textures so all those extra autumn layers look as cosy as they feel.
  • Bring the outdoors inside: Forest greens, warm browns, burnt oranges and other earthy shades capture the colours changing outside.
  • Have fun with pattern: Checks, gingham, botanicals and Halloween prints can give your autumn bed decor a more playful seasonal update.
  • Make comfort personal: If you're still searching for the cool side of the pillow in October, your autumn bedding probably shouldn't look the same as someone who's already complaining about cold feet.

9 Ideas To Create A Cosy Bed For The Colder Months

Whether you’re leaning heavily into autumnal themes, or subtly nodding to the season within your bedroom decor, we have an autumn bedding idea to match every style.

1. Choose A Versatile Duvet

You might see the temperature dropping and immediately run for the highest tog duvet you can find. That approach will keep you warm, but why not make a more versatile choice this autumn?

A middle-ground duvet can give you the warmth you need on cooler autumn nights without leaving you roasting when the weather decides it isn't quite finished with summer. Pair it with one of our autumn duvet cover sets and removable layers for a seasonal look, without committing to a much heavier duvet.

How warm you sleep matters too. If you're still flipping your pillow to find the cool side in October, you might prefer a lighter duvet with extra layers nearby. If cold feet are your nightly nemesis, keep a throw or bedspread at the bottom of the bed ready to pull up when you need it.

And if you share with a duvet hogger who somehow sleeps at a completely different temperature to you? Keeping the main duvet comfortable for both of you and adding a separate layer gives you a little more control over your own side of the bed.

2. Layer It Up

Autumn is the perfect excuse to start layering up your bed again. Blankets, autumn throws and cushions add warmth and texture, while letting you peel back a layer if autumn decides to give us one last warm night.

We did say more is more! Layer different colours and materials rather than matching everything exactly, but let each one earn its place. A throw folded across the bottom of the bed is ready for cold feet, while a blanket or quilt can be pulled higher when the temperature drops.

If you share your bed with someone who considers every blanket communal property, an extra throw on your side might save a few midnight negotiations too.

3. Try Snug Sherpa Fleece

If autumn had a texture, sherpa fleece would be a pretty strong contender. Soft, fluffy and made for chilly evenings, it's an easy way to make your bed look and feel cosier.

You don't need to cover the whole bed in it. Add a sherpa throw or blanket over smoother bedding so the contrast in texture stands out, then keep it within grabbing distance for nights spent reading, watching TV or refusing to leave the warmth of your bed.

If you like that fluffy autumn feel, our faux fur cushions and throws offer another way to introduce a plush finishing layer without changing your main bedding.

It's also an easy seasonal layer to remove once the weather warms up again, so your whole autumn bedding setup doesn't need to change with the calendar.

4. Don't Forget The Bedspread

An autumn bedspread gives your bed another layer of warmth while making it look fuller and more put together. Spread it across the bed for maximum cosiness or fold it over the lower half if you still want your duvet cover to do some of the talking.

Bedspreads are particularly useful during those awkward in-between weeks when it's too chilly for summer bedding but not quite time to turn your bed into a fortress of blankets. Pull it up when you need another layer, then fold it back when you don't.

Choose a shade or texture that contrasts with your duvet rather than disappearing into it. A quilted or textured bedspread over plain bedding, for example, adds depth without needing another pattern.

5. Mix Up Materials

Autumn is all about mixing up materials, so don't be afraid to get tactile. Smooth cotton, fluffy fleece, velvet, bouclé and quilted finishes can all bring something different to the bed.

The easiest way to stop those layers looking like they've simply been piled on is to vary the texture as you go. Pair smoother bedding and bed sheets with a textured bedspread, then finish with a softer throw and cushions.

This works particularly well with a neutral colour scheme. If cream, beige and brown are doing most of the colour work, contrasting textures keep each layer visible without having to introduce another shade.

And remember, cosy doesn't have to mean heavy. If you tend to run hot, use texture to create the autumn look and keep the layers themselves light enough to actually sleep under.

6. Get Your Pillows Right

You might not be considering switching out your pillows to welcome in autumn, but this is actually the perfect time to double check if they're still right for you. Have you been getting enough support for your head and neck while you sleep?

If you haven't been having the best experience with your pillows, it might be a good idea to switch them out and try a new style. Once the pillows you actually sleep on are sorted, you can have a little more fun with the decorative ones.

Autumn pillow designs and cushions are an easy way to bring seasonal colour, pattern and texture onto the bed without changing your main bedding. Velvet, bouclé, faux fur and rust-toned cushions are all useful ways to create a cosier autumn look.

A velvet, bouclé or textured cushion can also add that cosy autumn feel without adding another layer over your body while you sleep.

Just don't get too carried away. If half your autumn cushion collection ends up on the floor every night, you've probably found your limit.

7. Bring The Outdoors Inside

Autumn's colour palette is already waiting outside your window. Forest greens, warm browns, burnt oranges and rusty reds are an easy starting point for autumn bed designs inspired by the changing season.

You don't have to use them all at once. Pick one or two autumn colours for your bedding, throws or cushions, then balance richer shades with cream, beige or another neutral already in the room.

Look beyond colour too. Leaf-inspired prints, florals and other botanical autumn bedding patterns can bring a little of the outdoors in. Our floral bedding range includes leafy, botanical and floral designs that work naturally with this approach.

If checks are more your thing, checked bedding gives you another easy autumn pattern, including gingham and brushed checks that work well with layered throws and warmer colours.

And if you're not quite ready to wave goodbye to summer, don't. Keep your lighter base bedding and introduce autumn shades through smaller pieces that are easy to switch again when spring rolls around.

8. Have Some Halloween Fun

Who said autumn bedding has to be serious? If spooky season is your favourite part of autumn, this is your chance to have some fun with pumpkins, ghosts and other Halloween designs.

The trick is deciding how far you want to take it. Go all in with Halloween bedding for a playful autumnal statement, or keep your main bedding simple and bring the theme in through a cushion, throw or smaller accessory.

If you want your autumn bed decor to last beyond October 31st, borrow the colours rather than the characters. Rust, orange, black and deep green can give a nod to spooky season without making your bed look out of date as soon as the trick-or-treaters disappear.

9. Choose Natural Tones For A Comfy Feel

If pumpkins, ghosts and bold autumn bedding patterns aren't quite your thing, natural tones offer a softer way to embrace the season. Warm beige, cream, taupe, caramel and brown can give your bed an autumnal feel without leaning heavily into seasonal decor.

The trick is stopping a neutral bed from becoming one big block of beige. Mix lighter and darker tones, then change the texture between layers so each one still stands out.

Smooth bedding against a quilted bedspread and a soft throw, for example, can create plenty of depth without adding another colour.

Natural shades have another advantage when the seasons change again. Keep your neutral base in place, swap out the heavier autumn textures and you've got bedding that can work well beyond the colder months.

Not necessarily. If your current duvet still keeps you comfortable, add removable blankets, throws or a bedspread before switching to a higher tog. This gives you more control when autumn temperatures change from one night to the next.

Yes. Keep comfortable summer sheets or a neutral duvet cover as your base, then add an autumn bedspread, throw or cushions for extra warmth and seasonal colour. It's an easy way to transition between seasons without replacing perfectly good bedding.

Wash and completely dry summer bedding before folding it into a clean, dry storage bag or container. Keep it somewhere protected from damp and label different sizes or sets so they're easy to find when warmer weather returns.

Follow the care label and wash them according to how often they're used. Throws and bedspreads that regularly touch your skin, collect pet hair or join you for breakfast in bed will need washing more often than purely decorative layers.

Keep your autumn bed decor focused on one or two statement layers rather than lots of bulky accessories. A textured bedspread, patterned throw or a couple of autumn cushions can introduce colour and texture without making a smaller bed feel overcrowded.
