Straighten Things Out

Not all stripes give a bed the same look. Fine pinstripes and narrow lines feel more ordered and understated, while wider or more contrasting stripes make striped bedding stand out more. If you want something less formal, mélange and woven stripes soften the lines and give the pattern a relaxed finish.

Texture can change things just as much as stripe width. Seersucker, waffle and textured cotton designs create their pattern partly through the fabric itself, so they add interest without relying on strong colour contrast. Brushed cotton and jersey stripes have a softer look, while ruffles, wavy lines and brighter colour combinations take the pattern in a more playful direction.

You also don’t have to stripe the whole bed. A striped duvet cover with plain fitted sheets keeps the pattern contained, while matching striped pillowcases or flat sheets create a more coordinated look. If you are mixing different stripes, keeping them in a similar colour palette helps everything sit together without feeling too busy.
