Keep It Plain, Not Flat
With no busy print to work around, plain bedding puts more focus on fabric and finish. Smooth cotton sateen gives the bed a neater look, while muslin, waffle and seersucker create a more relaxed feel. Brushed cotton bedding, teddy fleece and faux fur bring extra texture when you want the bed to feel cosier.
Plain bedding also makes it easier to build the bed in layers. Keep the duvet cover and sheets in one shade for a matched look, or combine nearby tones such as white and natural, sage and cream, or silver and charcoal. A different coloured fitted sheet or set of plain pillowcases can add contrast without introducing another pattern.
Small details can make a simple plain duvet cover feel much more finished. Scalloped edges, frills, contrast trims and embroidery add interest around the edges, while Oxford pillowcases give the top of the bed a little more structure. A textured bedspread can do the same job if you prefer the main bedding to stay completely plain.
