Find Your Shade of Blue
Blue can take a bedroom in very different directions, so the shade is worth getting right first. Navy gives the bed more weight and works well when you want a richer look, while duck egg and softer blues keep things lighter and more relaxed. Mid-tones are a useful middle ground if you want noticeable colour without making the bed the strongest feature in the room.
The colours around your blue bedding will change how blue feels. Warm wood, cream and natural tones take the cooler edge off navy and deeper shades, while white gives pale blue a fresher contrast. Sage and muted greens can create a nature-inspired palette, whereas touches of ochre, rust or blush bring in warmth without competing with the blue.
Pattern is another way to control how much colour you introduce. A plain blue duvet cover gives you plenty of freedom to add patterned cushions or a throw, while stripes, checks or prints can do more of the decorating for you. If your blue bedding already has a busy design, keep the surrounding accessories simpler.
There’s no need for every blue in the room to match exactly. Mixing navy with softer blue or blue-grey can give the bed more depth. Pick one main shade, repeat it once or twice elsewhere, then use neutral sheets, cushions or throws to keep the overall look balanced.
