Fresh Without Feeling Plain
White bedding is a good blank canvas, but the finish makes a bigger difference than the colour itself. Smooth sateen gives the bed a neater look, while washed cotton, muslin and seersucker feel softer and more relaxed. Waffle, crinkle and tufted designs add texture without bringing another colour into the room.
Detail is another way to keep white bedding from feeling too plain. Scalloped edges, embroidery, lace and pinch pleats add a more decorative finish, while black, champagne or silver trims create a sharper contrast. If the room already has patterned wallpaper or a statement headboard, a simpler white duvet cover can balance things out and keep the bed from competing with everything around it.
Layering different whites works well too. Chalk, bright white and warmer off-white tones do not need to match perfectly, especially when the textures are different. Add a quilted bedspread or a couple of Oxford pillowcases to give the bed more shape, or bring in natural, sage, blush or blue through a blanket or filled cushions when you want a little colour.
