Switching Made Simple
Light switches give you a fixed point for controlling the lighting around your home. Choosing the right one means checking how many lights or lighting zones it needs to control, as well as how the existing circuit is set up.
The number of gangs refers to the separate controls on the plate. A single gang switch has one control, while two, three, four and six gang switches bring several together. Count the controls on your current plate rather than the number of bulbs in the room.
You’ll also need to check how many positions control each light. One-way switching operates a light from one place, while two-way switching lets you use switches in two locations, such as at either end of a hallway. An intermediate light switch is needed when the same light is controlled from three or more places.
Before replacing a fitting, check the plate size, wiring and back box depth. Screwless plates need a flat wall surface to sit neatly, while some mechanisms require more space behind them.
