Get the Match Right
A dimmer switch controls the brightness of a connected lighting circuit. Choose a single dimmer for one set of lights, or a double, triple or four-gang plate when you want to control several lighting circuits from the same point.
Before ordering, check that your bulbs are dimmable and that the switch is compatible with the type of lighting you have. This is particularly important with LED bulbs, as not every LED works with every dimmer.
You’ll also need to check the total lighting load. Add together the wattage of every bulb controlled by each dial, then compare it with the dimmer’s minimum and maximum load ratings. A poor match can cause flickering, buzzing or lights that don’t dim smoothly.
Once the practical details are covered, choose a finish that works with the room. Matt black and black nickel light switches add contrast, polished chrome and stainless steel light switches keep things cooler, while satin brass and antique brass light switches bring in more warmth. White is a simple choice when you want the plate to blend into the wall.
